These pictures were taken on Vaadhoo Island, Maldives but bioluminescent organisms are found all over the world. To seat and watch the beach light up with all these glowing organisms it’s just magical!

The light is produced by a pigment called luciferin and an enzyme called luciferase. The pigment reacts with oxygen and the enzyme speeds up the reaction. Other animals use the same pigment-enzyme tandem to produce light like fireflies, anglerfish and jellyfish for example.

Bioluminescence usually distracts predators from feeding by disrupting their swimming behavior and also acts as an alarm to attract animals that feed predators!
