The \u00ab\u00a0Romer\u00eda del Roc\u00edo\u00a0\u00bb is Spain’s biggest religious pilgrimage to honor the \u00ab\u00a0Virgen del Roc\u00edo\u00a0\u00bb. The celebration takes place on the weekend of Pentecost. The Virgin is located in the \u00ab\u00a0Ermita de El Roc\u00edo\u00a0\u00bb in the village of the same name, in the Huelva Province.<\/p>\n

The \u00ab\u00a0Romer\u00eda\u00a0\u00bb lasts for a week, there are more than 90 \u00ab\u00a0hermandades\u00a0\u00bb who still travel to \u00ab\u00a0El Roc\u00edo\u00a0\u00bb on foot, on horseback or in covered wagons. In the most festive atmosphere participants dress in fine Andalusian costumes, sing, dance, drink, laugh and make their way to \u00ab\u00a0El Roc\u00edo\u00a0\u00bb. The total number of people in the village can reach one million from the usual two thousand! The climax comes in the early hours of Monday when members of the Almonte \u00ab\u00a0hermandad\u00a0\u00bb take the Virgin out of her sanctuary.<\/p>\n

Big days are Sunday night and Monday of Pentecost, the procession starts with the spectacular \u00ab\u00a0salto de la reja\u00a0\u00bb and ends on Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Legend says that in the 13th century,\u00a0a hunter from Almonte village\u00a0found the effigy in a marshland tree and started to carry her home. But when he\u00a0stopped for a rest, the Virgin magically returned to the tree. Before long, a chapel\u00a0was built on the site of the tree and it became a place of pilgrimage. By the\u00a017th century, \u00ab\u00a0hermandades\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0were forming in nearby towns to make\u00a0Pentecost pilgrimages to \u00ab\u00a0El Roc\u00edo\u00a0\u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\n
