El Caminito del Rey (The King’s little pathway in English) is a walkway through the narrow gorge of El Chorro in Alora, Malaga.

This area is very famous among nature lovers as it offers amazing surroundings to practice trekking or nature trail. This little walkway offers spectacular views and a quite extreme experience as it can be quite dangerous or for advanced trekking.

It was built to provide workers from the hydroelectric plants of el Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls a cross between them, allowing people as well as material to flow from one to another. It took 4 years to build and works ended in 1905.

It rises over 100 meters above the river and it is only 1 meter width! Made of concrete resting on steel rails, there are sections where part or all of the concrete top has collapsed. So while trekking you will be confronted to large open air gaps that are bridged only by narrow steel beams. A few of the original handrails are still there but a safety-wide runs the length of the path for added security.

After some fatal accidents in 1999 and 2000, local authorities closed both entrances but they are schedule to re-open next February 2015 after renovation works. The initial project included a car park and a museum.
