Future is here «Smart Highways»!

A Dutch design studio, Studio Roosegaarde just presented at Dutch Design Week one of their futuristic projects called «Smart Highways».

What is it all about?

1. Use of dynamic paint, a paint that becomes visible to drivers when needed. For example when temperature drops outside and it gets icy, white icons of snowflakes will show up on the road to warn you about the hazard; or another icon will warn you about an accident on the way.

2. Use of smarter lights, lights will turn on when there are cars around only and glow-in-the-dark portions of the highway will charge with daylight and then light up at night. They are also considering the use of lights that «follow the car, chaperoning them home safely»

3. Electric priority lanes, one or more car lane that would use magnetic fields under the lane to charge an electric car!

Prototypes of the dynamic paint and glow-in-the-dark road concepts will be implemented this year in Oss, North Brabant, Holland. If all goes well we might get them all over Europe soon!

Well done!
